Description 

Hydrocyclone, also known as a cyclone, is a classification device that uses centrifugal force to accelerate the settling velocity of slurry particles and separate particles based on size, shape, and specific gravity. 

The principle of operation

The principle of operation is simple: the fluid carrying suspended particles enters the cyclone tangentially, spirals downward and generates a centrifugal field in a free vortex. The larger particles move through the fluid in a helical motion to the outside of the cyclone and exit through the casing with a portion of the liquid. Due to the restricted area of the casing, an inner vortex is established that rotates in the same direction as the outer vortex but flows upwards, which leaves the cyclone through the vortex separator and carries most of the liquid and fines. If the plug capacity is exceeded, the air core is closed and the plug discharge changes from an umbrella spray to a "rope" with coarse material flowing to the overflow.

1 Hydrocyclones can handle very high mud throughput rates, and it is common to find entire battery packs of hydrocyclones in mineral processing facilities.

2 The advantages of the fast treatment of the hydrocyclone are somewhat offset by the high impact wear rate associated with the fast moving abrasive slurry on the inner surface lining of the hydrocyclone.
